Antoine Fuqua: Among Our Generation’s In-Demand Directors

At this year’s Locarno Film Festival, director Antoine Fuqua turned up to present his action-packed film “The Equalizer 2” with Denzel Washington.

Director Antoine Fuqua is one of the most sought-after filmmakers of his generation and manages to combine action-based and character-based cinema effortlessly. His previous work, “The Magnificent Seven”, is a remake of the 1960 western of the same name and a homage to Akira Kurosawa’s “Seven Samurai”. With “The Magnificent Seven”, Fuqua expanded a classic story with his modern and stylish vision and cast it with renowned international stars such as Chris Pratt, Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawke. Before that, Fuqua made the box-office hit “The Equalizer” and the boxing drama “Southpaw” with a stunning Jake Gyllenhaal in the leading role. Furqua’s critically acclaimed drama “Training Day” earned Denzel Washington an Oscar® for Best Actor and Ethan Hawke a nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Fuqua has also directed films such as “Olympus Has Fallen” with Gerard Butler and Morgan Freeman, “Brooklyn’s Finest” with Richard Gere, the international hit “King Arthur” with Clive Owen and the blues documentary “Lightning in a Bottle”, produced by Martin Scorsese.
